UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors

Since the early 1950s, the United Nations has enlisted the volunteer services and support of prominent personalities from the worlds of art, music, film, sport and literature to highlight key issues and to draw attention to its activities. Over the years, many persons of international stature have lent their names, talents and time to support UN programmes—a number of UN Secretariat units and separately funded and administered Funds and Programmes of the United Nations have designated such individuals as Goodwill Ambassadors or celebrity advocates, who are working on behalf of the United Nations worldwide.

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador is an official postnominal honorific title, title of authority, legal status and job description assigned to those goodwill ambassadors and advocates who are designated by the United Nations. The United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) along with other United Nations agencies, has long enlisted the voluntary services and support of prominent individuals as goodwill ambassadors to advocate causes. Their fame helps amplify the urgent and universal message of human development and international cooperation, helping to accelerate programmes for children and youth. UNICEF is responsible for a wide-variety of educational and health projects. UNICEF is greatly responsible for the eradication of polio campaign. There are over 250 UNICEF goodwill ambassadors.

Danny Kaye was the first to hold the goodwill ambassador position, with the title of Ambassador-at-Large granted in 1954. Other celebrities have followed, acting as international, regional or national goodwill ambassadors, depending on their profile, interests, and desired level of responsibility. The goal of the program is to allow celebrities with a demonstrated interest in UNICEF issues to use their fame to draw attention to important issues. This may take the form of public appearances and talks, visits to troubled regions, which draw attention from the media, and use of their political access to advocate UNICEF causes.. -Wikipedia

UNICEF in many ways is responsible for the creation of the celebrity dynamic that has risen to the top of Goodwill Ambassador Legal Standing. UNICEF is by no means the first to use the Goodwill Ambassador title, but they are the first to make it world-wide after the title was created by the United States in 1927. UNICEF has taken the ideas and spirit of philanthropy to a whole new level by using celebrities dedicated to their professions from all fields including sports, the arts, cinema, music and have even incorporated kings, queens, presidents and national heroes.

On Wikipedia there is a List of UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors, it is a relatively good list but it is subject to vandalism, personal bonification, plus most of the references are out of date or based on dead links throughout Wikipedia; for content though it is truly remarkable the subjects it covers and the best way for most people to find what they are looking for.

Since 1999, some of the United Nations Diplomatic Corps and United Nations Association Chapters have referred to their ambassadors as Global Goodwill Ambassador or National Goodwill Ambassador of _________. The new guideline of a 3-6 letter alpha code preceding the "Goodwill Ambassador" title makes each ambassador unique with their proper name, disambiguates different UN departments, projects and programs as well as removes assumptions that fraudsters depend on.
